Uzbekistan: Two human rights activists released

Human rights activist Uktam Pardaev and opposition member Fakhriddin Tillaev returned home after having spent 15 days in prison.

Uktam Pardaev, head of the Jizzakh branch of the Independent Human Rights Organization of Uzbekistan, was released on October 17 after 15 days of detention.

Pardaev Jizzakh was detained by police of Jizzakh city on September 30 for allegedly speaking out against the obligatory participation in harvesting cotton in state owned plantations.

Human rights defender denies the allegations and believes he was detained for no wrongdoing.

A day after the release of Pardayev, authorities freed Fakhridding Tillaev, 42-year-old opposition activist.

Tillaev was detained by police of Surkhandarya region on 3 October for distributing leaflets in Kuyluk bazaar of Tashkent that called to join “Independent trade union of mardikors (laborers for hire – Jarayon)”.

It must be noted that on October 5 Uzbek human rights activists Abdullah Todzhiboy and Nuriddin Djumaniyazov staged a demonstration in front of the Interior Ministry demanding the release of human rights defender Uktam Pardaev and opposition activist Fakhriddin Tillaev.

Demonstrators were immediately arrested by police. They were released two hours later.
