Jamoliddin Kurbanov: I do not believe that my brother is a terrorist
Jamoliddin Kurbanov, the older brother of a refugee from Uzbekistan Fazliddin Kurbanov, who was arrested in the U.S. city of Boise on suspicion of helping terrorist organizations, says that the accusations against his younger brother is no more than a slander.
Came to United States three and a half years ago as a refugee from Tashkent, Fazliddin Kurbanov, was arrested on May 16, 2013 in Boise Idaho on suspicion of possession of explosives, and helping terrorist organizations. The trial of a citizen of Uzbekistan, who is currently under arrest in Boise, is due to start on July 2.
Jamoliddin Kurbanov, Fazliddin’s older brother, who now lives outside of Uzbekistan, says the charges against his brother seem to be false.
During the interview to “Jarayon”, Jamoliddin said that his younger brother Fazliddin, who has always been open, responsive and tolerant to other religions, recently have been working part time as a truck driver. And for this reason, says the elder brother of the detained Uzbek refugee in US, he could not even find enough time to communicate with his family, let alone the terrorists.
– Sometimes, when he had a free five to ten minutes when loading the cargo into his car, he was able to call us and talk. When he was on the road, he did not call us in order not to be distracted from the work. He was not in touch with us even via computer. During such time, he did not answer the phone even when the parents called, – says Jamoliddin Kurbanov.
However, he shared with one of his assumptions as to why his younger brother became a subject of interest for the American secret services. Jamoliddin says that in order for the family to live in prosperity, his younger brother Fazliddin decides to become a truck driver in US. One of his friends advised Fazliddin to go to Denver, Colorado, and meet with an Uzbek guy by name Jamshid. In Denver, Fazliddin meets Jamshid, who worked for a company that rents out trucks. Jamshid explained to Fazliddin that he needed to undergo a special course on driving a truck and get the appropriate driver’s license. After meeting Jamshid, Fazliddin goes back to Boise.
After about half a year, Fazliddin, who met and talked with Jamshid (Mukhtarov – Jarayon), employee of the company that leases trucks, discovers that Jamshid was arrested on suspicion of terrorism, and decides not to return to Denver.
35-year-old native of Uzbekistan, Jamshid Muhtorov, was arrested by the U.S. secret services at the airport in Chicago in January last year when taking a flight to Istanbul.
Mukhtarov, who has been living in America as a refugee for the past five years, was arrested on charges of providing material assistance and attempt to join the ranks of terrorist organizations. Court process on his case was to start in the summer of 2012, but so far there is no information about whether or not the court held a hearing on Jamshid Muhtorov’s case.
Jamoliddin Kurbanov suggests that his younger brother Fazliddin could become an object of interest for U.S. intelligence after communicating with Jamshid Mukhtarov. He also says that Fazliddin was always generous.
– If someone asked him for help and asked to give 50 or 100 dollars, he would give the money without hesitation. He had this habit. Maybe this was the reason for his arrest. However, I absolutely do not believe that my brother has joined the ranks of terrorists, – says Jamoliddin Kurbanov.
According to him, their parents were granted asylum in US as representatives of religious minorities. They converted to Christianity in Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan.
– For some time Fazliddin also attended church, but decided to go back to Islam, but even after that, he never argued with parents on the issue of religion, – says Jamoliddin.
Jamoliddin said that his younger brother has never divided people by religion and have always tried to help them.
– Whether a person is Muslim or Christian, or those in need – no matter, he always helped them. Once he shared with me his dream and said: “It would be great to collect money, and adopt orphans, or help people in need,” – remembers his younger brother’s words Jamoliddin Kurbanov.
The court process on Fazliddin Kurbanov’s case will start in July this year. At the end of the interview to “Jarayon”, Jamoliddin Kurbanov said he and his family were hoping that his younger brother Fazliddin would be acquitted and released in court.
