Rights activist Nabijon Jurabaev released from prison
75 -year-old rights activist Nabijon (Turaboy) Jurabaev, who was held in the colony number 64/34 (in Navoi city) under the Department of Corrections at the Interior Ministry of Uzbekistan, was released on December 29, 2013.
In an interview to “Jarayon”, Jurabaev said that he was released under an amnesty announced on the occasion of 22 anniversary of the Constitution of Uzbekistan.
“I am in good mood, everything is fine with my health. It turned out that I was the eldest prisoner in the colony. Both prison staff and inmates asked me with astonishment: “Father, why were you imprisoned?” It looks like I was destined to see those places too,” – said Nabijon Jurabaev in a phone conversation with “Jarayon”.
However, according to Juarabev, on the day of his liberation authorities opened a criminal case against his wife Feruza Mamatova under Article 139 (defamation) of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan. Mamatova was previously interrogated by officers of the investigative department of the Internal Affairs of Jizzakh region. According Nabijon Jurabaev , his wife is accused of “slandering the law enforcement officers of Jizzakh region.”
Uzbek human rights activists believe that the instigation of a criminal case against Feruza Mamatova is a logical continuation of the persecution that was launched against her husband Nabijon Jurabaev by the law enforcement officers in Jizzakh, who still want to take revenge on him.
Nabijon Jurabaev, 75 -year-old resident of Gallaaral district of Jizzakh region, was charged under Article 165 (Extortion in large amount) and Article 168 (Fraud) of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan. On August 23, 2013, he was sentenced to five years of imprisonment.
