Relatives of jailed independent journalist Dilmurod Sayid told Jarayon that people from above prevent his release.

They also provided “Jarayon”with a scanned version of his letters and poems, which he addressed to his friends and colleagues at large. The letter and poems were written on February 2014, but reached his relatives after a while.

Obid Saidov, Dilmurod Sayid’s younger brother, told Jarayon on 5 April that one of his brother’s friends delivered him the letter and poems.

“At present, there is only one piece of news – I was charged with a misconduct, that’s all. If there had not been this ‘that’s all’, the last misconduct would have been lifted. And then, if my health allowed, I could be released or moved to a penal colony. Well, such incidents began happening to me since my first day of imprisonment, to be more precise, from the day I was moved to the prison in Kattakurgan, and I do not know how long all this will go on…”, Dilmurod Sayid wrote in his letter dated 15 February.

According to Obid Saidov, last time he managed to visit his brother on March 27 2014 in the prison in Karshi.

“I was given permission for a one-day visit. Dilmurod condition was not bad. He said that he worked a little bit, but the work was not heavy,” said Obid Saidov.

In January 2014 Obid Saidov told Jarayon that his brother’s health was bad, and he hoped that the authorities would consider this, and soon he would be released under amnesty.

“At present, my brother is in low spirits, and does not expect amnesty for his release. He is always thinking about his sick mother, his dead wife and daughter. During one of the visits, Dilmurod said that he does not live, but simply exists. He even gave me a farewell note,” Obid Saidov told “Jarayon”.

Now Dilmurod Sayid’s relatives have completely lost hope for his early release from the prison.

“On 3 February, another misconduct of his was recorded. Prison officials forced him to write that he allegedly had not had lunch; instead he was busy doing something in a barrack. After that they told my brother: “Don’t get us wrong, we received this order from above, so we forced ​​you write such an explanation”. Dilmurod was hoping as well as we that he would be released under an amnesty, or transferred to a penal colony to be released soon. But again the authorities deprived my sick brother of such a possibility,” Obid Saidov regretfully told “Jarayon”.

Currently Dilmurod Sayid is serving a prison sentence in the prison in the city of Karshi, Kashkadarya province. The journalist had tuberculosis. Previously, he was in the prison in the city of Navoi, a penal facility for prisoners with tuberculosis. However, after he was transferred first to Sangorod (prison hospital UA 64 /18 located in Tashkent – “Jarayon’s” note), and then to Karshi, a working settlement.

In 2009, independent Uzbek journalist Dilmurod Sayid was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison charged with “extortion” and “manufacturing of forged documents, stamps, seals and forms.” In the court, Sayid categorically denied the charges.

Human rights organizations stated about fabricated criminal cases against Dilmurod Sayid, and still believe that he was jailed for his professional activities. After the trial, some witnesses retracted their statements against Dilmurod Sayid, while others stated that they testified against him under pressure from the Uzbek security services.

In 2009, when Dilmurod Sayid was serving his sentence, his 34-year-old wife Barno Zhumanova and his only 6-year-old daughter Rukhshona were killed in a car crash. His wife and daughter were on the way from Tashkent to Navoi visit him in the prison.

Now Dilmurod Sayid’s younger brother and elderly, sick mother wait for his release. His mother will be 89 years old on May 9, 2014.
