Human rights activist and her grandmother was detained by police for several hours

On October 13, law enforcement authorities in Karshi detained the human rights activist Gulshan Karayeva and her 100-year-old grandmother, and kept them for several hours in police department.

Gulshan Karayeva herself told about their detention to Mutabar Tadjibayeva, head of the international human rights organization “Fiery Hearts Club”, during the phone conversation.

According to Karayeva, police kept her and her 100-year-old grandmother in the department of internal affairs of Karshi city. The human rights activist also said that law enforcement officers did not use any violence against her and her grandmother.

“Gulshan said that the police was not rude, and did not do anything bad against them. She and her grandmother were given tea and something to eat. They were just kept in the building of the police department. Probably, police did not want to release them, so that they would not organize a demonstration afterwards,” – says Tadjibayeva.

Gulshan Karaeva and her 100-year-old grandmother Bibisuluv Alimardonova were detained at 9:00 am on October 13 by a group of policemen, who stopped a taxi they were in together with rights activist Nadir Akhatov.

Karaeva’s relatives contacted Mutabar Tadjibaeva via the phone and told about their detention. At first, relatives did not know where activist and her grandmother were taken to.

Mutabar Tadjibaeva called the police department in Karshi two times to find out more about the incident. But police told her that they did not know the whereabouts of human rights activist and her grandmother.

Later that day Karayeva managed to make a secret call to the family and let them know that they had been kept in the department of internal affairs of Karshi city.

100-year-old Bibisuluv Alimardonova, grandmother of the rights activist, wanted to hold a demonstration outside the administration building of Kashkadarya region in defense of her grandchildren Gulshan and Sanjar Karayev, who, according to the old woman, were unfairly subjected to provocations and pressure from law enforcement agencies.

Authorities opened a criminal case against Sanjar Karayev and Gulshan Karayeva. Police is accusing Sanjar of causing physical injury, and his sister, Gulshan, of insulting and slandering the neighbors.
