Uzbekistan: Two human rights activists released

Human rights activist Uktam Pardaev and opposition member Fakhriddin Tillaev returned home after having spent 15 days in prison.

Uktam Pardaev, head of the Jizzakh branch of the Independent Human Rights Organization of Uzbekistan, was released on October 17 after 15 days of detention.

Domestic violence is a reason many Tajik women are committing suicide

Domestic violence against women remains a serious problem in Tajikistan. Despite this, the Tajik parliament still hasn’t discussed the bill “About fighting against domestic violence”.

According to non-governmental organizations struggling to protect rights of women and children in Tajik society, the past nine months of 2012 registered more cases of domestic violence in comparison to the same period of the previous year.

The adoption of news laws does not change human rights situation in Uzbekistan

It is well known that the human rights situation in Uzbekistan remains permanently critical. The task of human rights activists is not in attempting to avoid repetition of the already mentioned positions, but in stating of facts about the real situation and current trends.

Thus, during my speech, I’ll probably repeat points and positions that were mentioned by me and other human rights activists. Also, I will try to briefly analyze the behavior of the authorities and their response to criticism related to human rights.

Kazakhstan: Conflicting statements on Kozlov’s case

Conviction of Vladimir Kozlov, leader of the unregistered opposition party “Alga”, for seven and a half years has caused contradictory statements form West and Kazakh authorities.

Initially, the U.S. Embassy in Astana has expressed concern with sentencing of the Kazakh opposition leader and stated that the Kazakh government is using the criminal case to suppress the voice of the opposition in the country.

Ministers’ meeting must include a discussion of a situation with human rights in Uzbekistan

It is expected that on October 16 Abdulaziz Kamilov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, visits Paris to meet with his French counterpart Mr. Laurent Fabius. The open media has not yet announced the agenda of the minister’s meeting.

Given that, the International human rights organization “Fiery Hearts Club” calls upon the government of France to raise the issue with human rights in Uzbekistan during the upcoming talks. We view France as one of the world’s leading democracies, one of the world’s cradles of ideas and traditions of human rights and democracy.

International human rights organizations are concerned about the situation of Farhodkhon Mukhtorov

On Monday, October 1, International human rights organization “Fiery Hearts Club”, the Committee to release the prisoners of conscience in Uzbekistan, the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, the International Federation for Human Rights and the World Organization Against Torture issued a joint press-release in which they condemned the recent persecution of human rights activist Farhodkhon Mukhtorov in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The press release was also signed by Tolib Yakubov, honorary president of the International Human Rights Society of Uzbekistan.

Tajikistan: Secret behind the bars

There have been many stories during recent years about torture of prisoners and inmates’ death cases as a result of ill treatment in prisons of Tajikistan. These stories are usually widely discussed in international arena.

According to Tajik authorities, including officials of judicial system, conditions in prisons in the country are satisfactory. Officials claim that reports of international organizations about torture and ill treatment in prisons of Tajikistan are merely “fabricated empty accusations”.

Kazakhstan: Witness in Zhanaozen Riots Case Murdered

Winess Aleksandr Bozhenko, who gave scandalous testimonies in Zhanaozhen trial, was killed, according to head of NGO “Liberty” Galym Ageleulov.

Aleksand Bozhenko had made an open statement that he was forced to give anonymous testimonies against defendants during the trial on riots happened in Zhanaozen city of Kazakhstan in December 2011.

Human rights activist and her grandmother was detained by police for several hours

On October 13, law enforcement authorities in Karshi detained the human rights activist Gulshan Karayeva and her 100-year-old grandmother, and kept them for several hours in police department.

Gulshan Karayeva herself told about their detention to Mutabar Tadjibayeva, head of the international human rights organization “Fiery Hearts Club”, during the phone conversation.

Law enforcement authorities in Karshi city detained human rights activist Gulshan Karayeva and her 100-year-old grandmother on October 13, 2012.

Relatives of the detained human rights activist contacted Mutabar Tajibaeva, head of “Fiery Hearts Club”, via telephone and told about the incident that happened at about 9:00 am.
